Things to know before your apartment search
With real estate prices on the rise more and more are renting and it's becoming harder and harder to find a suitable
apartment for rent. Its therefore becoming
increasingly important knowing exactly what you want and what you can afford before you search.
Things you should know before looking for a new apartment:
How much can you afford?
You have to know your monthly budget to ensure that you can pay the rent every month and at the same time have money left over. Once you’ve decided on the appropriate rent you’ve narrowed down your
apartment search significantly.
Know the neighborhood:
Once you’ve decided on the maximum rent you are willing to pay you need to decide on the best neighborhood for you. Here are a few things to consider:
- Is it within the realm of what you are willing to pay?
- Is it safe?
- Is it near your work or school?
In some cases it might be better picking an apartment further away from your school if there’s good public transit system. If you have to drive it might be worthwhile calculating how much you would pay in
gas, insurance etc for your car. It might turn out that you can afford a place closer to your work even if the rent is higher since you will be saving in car expenses.
What to do if you don’t know the neighborhood?
This is a common problem for students and people moving for work. The best advice to give is to ask people at your school/work. Rentmore.ca also offers the option of searching for local businesses on the
rental listings. This way you can quickly see if the neighborhood has the stores etc that you need in your daily life. You can check out the search by going to
Rentmore.ca and using the
Apartment Search. On the map shown there’s a small
Search the map that you can use. You can also use the search by picking a city or a specific listing.
